Alphabet’s Chronicle Debuts Biggest VirusTotal Update In 14 Years

In short: Chronicle, an Alphabet-owned company spun off from moonshot factory X Development (formerly known as Google X), announced the biggest update in the 14-year history of VirusTotal, a browser-based malware scanner and cybersecurity tool Google bought in 2012 before ceding its ownership earlier this year. The upgrade comes in the form of VirusTotal Enterprise, a new platform that offers all features of the existing tool and expands them with a broad range of functionalities, including a more robust graphing service, improved search, and a revamped user interface. Much like its name implies, the solution has been specifically designed for enterprises, i.e. improving their digital protections.

Discovering both known and unknown threats is a core part of VirusTotal Enterprise’s functionality, with the newly announced platform being built from the ground up for large-scale deployments characteristic for enterprise environments. The company is presently accepting demo and trial applications at info@virustotal.com but with no pricing schemes being publicly disclosed, AndroidHeadlines understands the price of the solution is client-dependent and is primarily affected by the scale of its applications.

Background: The development comes shortly after AndroidHeadlines observed some activity on the part of Chronicle’s former parent in the cybersecurity segment; despite spinning off the division it started in 2016 this January, X Development continues to dabble in such solutions on its own. When asked how the firm fits into the grander scheme of things at Alphabet, especially given the aforementioned observations, Chronicle pointed to the launch of VirusTotal Enterprise as an example of its continued work in the cybersecurity segment, without commenting on its former parent’s endeavors.

Impact: The commercial potential of VirusTotal Enterprise remains unclear, especially given how Chronicle hasn’t confirmed any clients embraced the service already. The VirusTotal Mobile Android app hasn’t been updated since early 2017 but the firm hasn’t abandoned it, a company official said in a statement provided to AndroidHeadlines.
