In short: LG released a new teaser for its upcoming V40 ThinQ Android flagship, confirming the device will be equipped with a triple-camera setup and five imaging sensors in total. in addition to providing a glimpse at three of its colors which will presumably be available at launch – black, blue, and pink(ish). All three variants appear familiar and are likely to be called Aurora Black, Moroccan Blue, and Raspberry Rose, with LG already commercializing those names with the V30 last year and revising some of them for its first 2018 flagships. The trailer that can be seen below has been aired in the company’s home country of South Korea and also appears to be hinting at an ergonomic design.
Background: The LG V40 ThinQ has already been leaked on numerous occasions, with the device seemingly being a straightforward upgrade on the V35 ThinQ, the last member of the high-end product family. It’s still unclear how LG will handle the addition of an extra camera on the back, with previous reports suggesting the company may avoid a telephoto lens and instead opt for two wide-angle modules and another standard imaging unit. In the hardware department, the handset is set to debut with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 chip, at least 6GB of RAM, and a 64GB storage base. A quad-DAC should be part of the package as well, together with Android 9 Pie. The V40 ThinQ will be officially launched on October 4, LG confirmed earlier this month.
Impact: LG’s decision to embrace triple-camera setups is yet another indication of this trend gaining significant momentum in the mobile industry, though many question marks about the company’s implementation of the technology remain. Whereas Huawei used the third camera to improve the resolution of its images, Samsung is understood to be aiming at more versatility, whereas LG may end up opting to follow suit with either rival or pursue a more unique take on the technology.
