The Google Clock app for Android has just received an update that'll be music to sleepy ears: you can now choose to be woken by your favorite tunes streamed from YouTube Music and Pandora.

It's been possible to set songs from Spotify as your morning alarm since July last year, but if you used a different music streaming service, you were left with just the tunes downloaded to your phone. Now, Google Clock 6.1.0 is rolling out to Android handsets, with YouTube Music as a new option.

Before you can stream music as an alarm, you'll need to have the corresponding app installed. It will then appear as an option when you tap the 'Alarm sound' option.

Get up and get down

It's worth noting that you'll only be able to stream music from YouTube as an alarm if you have a premium YouTube Music subscription, which currently costs $9.99/£9.99/AU$11.99 per month.

If you haven't received the update before you're ready to go to sleep tonight, you can download it from APKMirror to get it early. Find out how to download and install an APK file.

The best Samsung Galaxy S7 deals in March 2019

The Samsung Galaxy S7 may now be over two years old but it is by no means a bad device. In fact, the Samsung Galaxy S7 is a great handset for bargain hunters. You've probably seen the insanely-great Samsung Galaxy S9 or Note 9 or even Samsung's newest Galaxy S10, but then also seen the prices and decided to see what else is on offer. Bag a Galaxy S7 deal and you'll get a fantastic phone for a reasonable price.

2016's Galaxy S7 - together with the bigger S7 Edge - is still a very good handset in its own right, sharing a lot of the battery management power and camera smarts from its successor the Galaxy S8. You can see a potted review under our top handpicked deals below and it's soooooo much cheaper than the newer Samsung smartphones.

You can easily get away with bills in the low twenties. Or, if you're prepared to part with around £50 at the outset, you can even get them below the £20 mark. And big data deals now come cheap, too. Excellent value when you consider that the S7 used to be one of the best phones around. You will notice though that the majority of deals still going for this device are on EE, it seems to have knocked all other competing networks off the list.

The Galaxy S6 definitely left some room for improvement and, thankfully, Samsung tinkered and tweaked the design to make one heck of a successor. The Galaxy S7 is iterative perfection -  it doesn't reinvent the wheel, but Samsung clearly listened to the feedback and criticism to create a stand-out device.

The best Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL deals in March 2019

The Google Pixel 2, the 2017 apple of the search giant's smartphone eye, is almost at an end. The Pixel 2 may soon be dead, but long live the Pixel - the Google Pixel 3 has been here for a little while now and has replaced it entirely.

If you've been fancying the Pixel 2 for a while and really don't want to splash the cash on the much costlier new phone, then you'll have to strike pretty swiftly as we're not sure how much longer this device will stay relevant. And the same goes for the Google Pixel 2 XL.

Whichever handset you covet, you can use our price comparison below to identify the best Pixel 2 deal for you. Google's quest to build a smartphone as popular as the latest iPhone and Samsung Galaxy flagship mobiles took a massive step forward when the original Google Pixel launched last year. And its successor - the aptly named Google Pixel 2 - continued the stellar work and now the Google Pixel 3 has stepped that up even further.

Need some more convincing? Use the 10OFF voucher code from Mobiles.co.uk that knocks a tenner off the upfront cost of any deal from that retailer - it's exclusive to TechRadar readers. And there's a summary of our expert review at the bottom of the page.

More options: Samsung Galaxy S9 deals | Samsung Galaxy Note 9 deals | iPhone 8 deals | SIM only deals | Best mobile phone deals

There's no doubt that the Pixel 2 was one of the very finest Android phones out there on release (and, to be fair, remains so), but the Pixel's successor is a familiar story of incremental improvements rather than whole-scale change. The feature that might just get you buying are the top-of the-line cameras for photos and video. While the delightful screen, great-sounding speakers and slick Android operating system will all appeal to a range of smartphone users.

AMD’s new FreeSync 2 HDR demo shows off ‘next level’ tech for gaming displays

You may recall that a while back AMD had a ‘Windmill’ demo to illustrate how the original FreeSync worked to mitigate stuttering and tearing, and now there’s a second demo about to be unleashed to show off the benefits of the firm’s improved FreeSync 2 HDR technology.

The new ‘Oasis’ demo runs through various intricate landscape scenes to make the benefits of FreeSync 2 HDR clear. It has been built using Unreal Engine 4 and supports HDR10.

Viewers can switch FreeSync on or off, and also switch between HDR and SDR, to see for themselves exactly what difference this makes. It will also be possible to control the speed of panning, rewind the demo, or change various graphics settings (effects, shadows, bloom and so forth).

So what does FreeSync 2 HDR actually entail and how does it move AMD’s syncing tech forward? You wouldn’t be the only person to wonder, which is exactly why AMD is releasing this demo, and is planning to showcase it in retail stores.

In a blog post, AMD noted: “In addition, we’re planning a program where people browsing monitors in retail stores will have better visibility on FreeSync and FreeSync 2 HDR products – stay tuned for more on that.

“We hope that once you experience the demo live at a store, you’ll be convinced to get on the AMD Radeon FreeSync 2 HDR Technology train and never look back.”

It very much sounds like this is a big push from AMD to show exactly how FreeSync 2 HDR, in the company’s own words, “raises the bar to the next level for gaming displays”.

So, to go back to the question, what does FreeSync 2 HDR actually bring to the table above and beyond AMD’s original FreeSync tech?

Well, obviously enough, there’s support for HDR monitors, and what’s more, FreeSync 2 HDR panels must conform to a certain HDR specification laid down by AMD. Indeed, there is a “meticulous monitor certification process to ensure exceptional visual experiences”, no less.

Refreshing change

Another step forward is the fact that AMD is insisting FreeSync 2 HDR monitor makers guarantee support for LFC or Low Frame-rate Compensation. LFC is used when you’re running games and your GPU is struggling and can’t meet the minimum supported FreeSync range in terms of the monitor’s refresh rate.

LFC artificially bumps up the frame-rate your PC is achieving – by showing the same frames twice, or more – to boost it so it’s within the supported range, so the syncing tech will kick in to do its expected anti-stuttering trickery. Without LFC, if you’re running below the supported range, you’ll still get tearing artefacts and jerkiness, as syncing won’t be active.

Finally, FreeSync 2 HDR also brings a low latency guarantee, simply meaning that the monitor in question will have a low input latency (and that includes when running HDR).

Note that the core syncing tech remains the same as the original FreeSync, but what you’re getting is all these extras.

AMD says that there are now 11 monitors available which support FreeSync 2, including the Samsung 49HG90, Asus ROG Strix XG49VQ (pictured at the top of this article), and AOC Agon AG322QC4.

The Oasis demo isn’t available to download at the time of writing, and it’s not clear if AMD will release it publicly – it may well simply be intended to be distributed to the likes of the aforementioned retailers to show off the relevant monitors.

That said, if the company does make the demo available so you can try it out on your FreeSync 2 monitor at home, we’ll be sure to let you know. Meantime, you can check out the above video for a glimpse of the demo, and AMD has some further website blurb here.

Icons and screenshots of Chromium-based Edge appear online

Icons and screenshots have leaked showing Microsoft’s upcoming overhaul of its Edge web browser, which will be based on the Chromium engine.

After Microsoft’s surprising (but not completely unexpected) announcement last year that it was going to use Chromium as the engine for its struggling Edge web browser, we’ve been eager to see what this redesign could look like.

Now, a few snippets have emerged online that gives us a brief glimpse of the new Chrome-based Edge. Twitter user ADeltaX posted screenshots (below) of the apparent installer screen for the new version of Edge, which shows up when you download and install the browser.

While this doesn’t show us anything of the browser itself, it does suggest that we may soon be able to try out an early version of it.

Iconoclastic

We’ve also got a brief look at Chromium-based Edge’s icon, thanks to a hastily-deleted tweet by Chris Heilmann, program manager for open web and browsers at Microsoft.

Heilmann had apparently posted a picture with two Edge icons on his taskbar. One was the standard blue Edge icon, but the other was a yellow version with the word ‘Can’ across it. Many people have taken this as a reference to Chromium Canary, which is an early version of Chromium builds that contain the very latest features for people to try out.

Although Heilmann deleted the tweet, some people were fast enough to save the images and repost them (see below).

Hopefully, as we mentioned earlier, this means that we’ll be getting our hands on an early version of Edge Chromium soon.

Huawei: US has no evidence for security claims

Huawei has emphatically denied US allegations of espionage in what is its most public and provocative rejection to date.

The company has largely been excluded from the US’s telecoms infrastructure on national security fears, while other nations have also expressed concern in recent months. It has also been reported that the US has been urging allies to follow its lead.

The fears are largely founded on Huawei’s perceived links to the Chinese government and a belief that legislation requires firm’s in China to assist in state surveillance.

Public rejection

Speaking at Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2019 in Barcelona this week, Rotating Chairman Guo Ping said that Huawei’s networking products were the most advanced in the world, but its innovations would be useless unless it ensured they were secure.

“Of course, the past few months have been a challenge for us. On one hand, our 5G solutions are widely recognised in the industry,” he said. “On the other hand, there has been a lot of speculation about the security of our 5G solutions.

“With 5G, we have made a lot of progress over 4G, and we can proudly say that 5G is safer than 4G. As vendors, we don't operate carrier networks, and we don't own carrier data. Our responsibility, what we promise, is that we don't do bad things.”

“Here, let me say this as clearly as possible: Huawei has not and will never plant backdoors. And we will never allow anyone to do so in our equipment. We take this responsibility very seriously.”

Ping also addressed the US allegations specifically, stating there was no evidence that its kit was insecure to use and also referenced previous US state surveillance programmes as proof of hypocrisy

“The US security accusation on our 5G has no evidence, nothing,” he declared. “The irony is that the US Cloud Act allows their governmental entities to access data across borders.

“Prism, prism on the wall. Who’s the most trustworthy of them all? It’s an important question to ask. And if you don’t understand this question, go ask Edward Snowden.”

Independent regulation

Ping urged governments around the world to adopt unified cybersecurity standards that can be used for honest regulation. He suggested the European model should be adopted worldwide.

“To build a secure cyber environment for everyone, we need standards, we need fact-based regulation, and we need to work together,” he said. “[We need] to build a system that we all can trust, we need aligned responsibilities, unified standards, and clear regulation.

“Governments and mobile operators should work together to agree upon Europe's assurance testing and certification regime. NESAS is a very good idea and I would recommend extending it to the world.”

There is little appetite among operators for any ban as they fear it would increase prices and reduce innovation. So far it claims to have shipped more than 47,000 5G base stations and to have won more than 30 commercial contracts.

In the UK, Huawei serves nearly all of the major operators and is expected to play a major role in the launch of 5G. The use of its equipment is subject to monitoring by a dedicated GCHQ unit.

The best Nokia 8 deals in March 2019

2017 marked Nokia's renaissance year. After stunning us by announcing it was revamping the Nokia 3310 and then releasing a further three mobiles, it ended the year by releasing its first high-powered smartphone in three years - the Nokia 8.

Almost two years on and although it's never going to challenge the power of Samsung and Apples newer devices, it does have the kind of price tag that will appeal to people who want to get a bargain mobile phone. Especially excellent value, considering the stunning design, premium screen and chipset, and new 'Bothie' camera mode.

It's been a while, but Nokia is finally back with a serious phone. Of course we were all delighted to see the return of the Nokia 3310 through a nostalgic haze, but if Nokia was going to be regarded as a genuine threat to the likes of Samsung, Apple and LG again, it needed a handset of heft.

The Nokia 8 is exactly that. Not in its dimensions, mind you - weighing in it at 160g, it's a slim, sleek and sometimes shiny smartphone. We're referring more to the dazzling QHD 5.3-inch display, 4GB Ram and Snapdragon 835 chipset. All massive plus points in our eyes, even if the much touted 'Bothie' camera mode probably isn't.

The best Sony Xperia XZ Premium deals in March 2019

When the Sony Xperia XZ Premium hit the shelves two years ago, it massively impressed us with its scintillating 4K display and beguiling slow motion camera. What didn't impress us was the price, which came in only a shade under the steep Samsung Galaxy S8 prices at the time.

Xperia XZ Premium deals got gradually cheaper in the months that followed -
probably thanks to the arrivals of the iPhone 8 and Galaxy Note 8. And now they have dropped even further (the world of iPhone XS Max and Note 9 prices tends to do that). The only cause for concern is that there now seem to be far fewer XZ Premium deals out there. It's as if the retailers have cleared the stock room to make room for the Xperia XZ2.

For the meantime though, we can tell you that the Sony Xperia XZ Premium is a bonafide hit and a genuine step up from the XZ. So use our comparison chart to pick out your perfect deal, before the phone disappears from the shelves completely.

The cheapest iPhone 7 unlocked SIM-free prices in March 2019

Don't like the idea of committing to two years of a phone contract? Buying the iPhone 7 unlocked and SIM free can be a cost-effective and convenient alternative.

That's particularly true given the highly competitive and consumer friendly SIM only deals market right now, which allows you to get bags of data and minutes for very little money.

Buying the iPhone 7 unlocked is also an optimum way of giving the phone as a gift as it means you only need to pay the cost of the handset and doesn't commit you to 24 months of additional payments or require you to go through a credit check. And we'll make you this guarantee - you won't have to pay the extraordinary amount of money it costs to buy the iPhone XS Max or XR!

iPhone 7 SIM-free deals fluctuate from day to day and many sites charge higher or lower fees than others. So shopping around or doing a bit of price comparison is a shrewd way to ensure you pay as little as possible for your new unlocked phone.

Luckily TechRadar is here to help. Our price comparison tools search the web every hour to locate the cheapest and best value unlocked iPhone 7 prices currently available.

The cheapest iPhone 6S unlocked SIM-free prices in March 2019

A lot of devices have come out since the iPhone 6S but the issue is that a lot of them are seriously expensive. Seeing the price tag of the iPhone XS Max is more than enough to make you run back to the comforting prices of the 6S!

The shape, screen size and resolution of the newer phones is the same as on the 6S, so you can buy the cheapest model of the three and still have a very similar experience.

And that’s where we come in: we’ve done the hard work in rooting through the likes of Amazon, eBay and the other major retailers to work out where the best unlocked iPhone 6S handsets are lurking, so you don’t end up spending too much.

If you’re looking for a SIM free phone deal, then the chances are you’re looking to upgrade an older iPhone, or (sadly) replace a broken or lost handset - if that’s the case, then you’ll enjoy the power and performance on offer from the iPhone 6S.

If you’re upgrading from an iPhone 5S, for instance, you’ll love the larger screen that lets you do so much more - and if you combine it with with a cheap SIM only deal you’ll be able to get online for very little without being tied into a long-term contract.

So have a look below at TechRadar’s custom-made price comparison chart to ensure you pay a great price for your new phone.

The cheapest iPhone 6 unlocked SIM-free prices in March 2019

Three years after launch, you may have your eye on the iPhone 6 as an affordable SIM free handset. With the iPhone 7 costing an arm and a leg - and with a whole troop of handsets launched since (all the way from the iPhone 8 through to the XR) - the iPhone 6 represents a still-superb Apple flagship phone that you can buy for less.

And we've done the hard yards to unearth the best prices on unlocked iPhone 6 handsets, trawling through the major retailers such as Amazon and eBay to make sure that you don't end up paying over the odds.

Chances are that you're probably looking for a new SIM-free phone deal to replace a lost or stolen phone (you have our sympathies!). But perhaps you're looking to save a little cash by combining a bargain iPhone 6 with a cheap SIM only deal. You can buy a new SIM for only a tiny amount, so combining the two could save you a packet on a standard contract deal. Plus, you can go for a 12-month or even 30-day plan rather than committing to two years.

So before you start typing in credit card deals for your new phone deal, make sure to have a good look at the below table first. TechRadar's custom-made price comparison chart will ensure you pay the very least.

The cheapest iPhone SE unlocked SIM-free prices in March 2019

Smartphones are getting ever bigger, yet our hands are staying the same size. It means those with smaller palms, pockets and bags can find themselves a little overwhelmed by the likes of the iPhone XR and Samsung Galaxy S10.

Help is at hand though, and for those looking for a more manageable iPhone, Apple has the perfect device - the iPhone SE. What's even better, is this smaller smartphone also comes with a smaller price tag.

And we've done the hard yards to unearth the best prices on unlocked iPhone SE handsets, trawling major retailers such as Amazon and eBay to make sure that you don't end up paying over the odds.

The iPhone SE is only three years old, and boasts the newer iPhone features such as Apple Pay and the Touch ID fingerprint scanner - so it's not like you'll be left behind in the tech department if you pick up this 4-inch phone.

We can only assume that you're looking for a new SIM-free phone deal to replace a lost or stolen phone (We really do sympathise). But perhaps you're looking to save a little cash by combining a bargain iPhone SE with a cheap SIM only deal. You can buy a new SIM for a small amount, so combining the two could save you a packet on a standard contract deal. Plus, you can go for a 12-month or even 30-day plan rather than committing to two years.

The cheapest Samsung Galaxy S8 unlocked SIM-free prices in March 2019

When it was released the Samsung Galaxy S8 held the spot of best phone in our eyes for quite a while. We have had a number of new winners like the S9 Plus, iPhone XR and most recently the S10, since but this is still a seriously great device.

We've been trawling through the best prices for unlocked Samsung Galaxy S8 handsets from the major retailers including the big hitters of Amazon and eBay to ensure you're getting the best price possible this month.

There is a bit of a choice to be made here as you can spend an extra £100 or so to go up a model and get the Galaxy S9 SIM free instead. But if you're all about saving those pennies this is the perfect option.

Buying SIM-free may well be the best route for you to get your hands on the phone rather than our selection of the best Galaxy S8 deals, which usually run for at least two years. If you're in a contract and want to replace phone you've lost or had been stolen, or whether you just don't want to enter a 24 month contract, this could be the best way to get the Galaxy S8 in your hands.

Once you've found your favorite deal for the Galaxy S8, we've also put together a selection of cheap SIM only deals for you to pick from too. There we have options for 12-month plans and even one month rolling contracts too so you can find the cheapest way of owning the Galaxy S8.

The best Nokia 3310 deals and prices in March 2019

The reboot of the iconic Nokia 3310 phone has generated a lot of buzz since it was sensationally revealed in 2017. Do not underestimate the nostalgia for the simpler, cheaper mobile phones - or for Snake!

A growing number of retailers - including Amazon and Argos - sell the Nokia 3310, and we can tell you who has it cheapest below. And it's now finally available on contract, too, although we think it makes far more sense just to buy the handset and grab a separate SIM only deal.

If you decide that you want something a bit more advanced than the Nokia 3310, then try our selection of the best SIM-free phones and deals or check out the Nokia 3 and Nokia 5.

The 2017 Nokia 3310 is looking like a great purchase for anyone looking for a spare mobile to take camping, or to festivals, thanks to its super-low cost and long life between battery charges. Maybe you just don't need all the bells and whistles of a modern smartphone, or perhaps just want to bag a cheap mobile phone deal.

Where can I buy the new Nokia 3310 SIM-free?

Vodafone was the first big network to start stocking the new Nokia 3310, before other major retailers - such as Amazon, Argos and Tesco Direct - turned up to the 90s themed party. If you've got fifty pounds on you, you can get hold of a Nokia 3310 and still get change in return.

Once you've picked out the handset you want to buy, you can then head to our SIM only deals page to buy a cheap SIM to pop in it with prices starting from well less than a fiver per month.

Best Nokia 3310 deals on contract

We waited aaaaaaaages after the Nokia 3310's release to see some contract plans, and now it feels like we shouldn't have bothered. Although we've seen tariffs for as little as a tenner a month with nothing to pay upfront, we can't imagine why you'd bother committing yourself to a lengthy contract, when you can just buy the handset cheap as chips and get a more flexible SIM or pay-as-you go price.

Is the Nokia 3310 any good?

A new Nokia 3310 was always going to make misty-eyed a generation whose youth was spent whiling away hours on Snake. But there's more to this phone than purely nostalgia. Its featherweight design, convenient number keys, marathon battery and ridiculous price is going to appeal to people who just want a very cheap handset for festivals, holidays and emergencies. And did we mention Snake?

For those people who expect their smartphones to be kitted out with high resolution displays and industry leading cameras, clearly the Nokia 3310 is the polar opposite. Read more about the pros and cons in our full Nokia 3310 review.

What colours are available for the new Nokia 3310?

The new Nokia 3310 is available in a range of colours. Depending on where you buy it from, there are options in blue, black, red, yellow and grey.

The best Nokia 6 deals and prices in March 2019

2017 was a busy year for Nokia. As if the re-release of the nostalgia-fuelled Nokia 3310 wasn't enough, the Finnish manufacturer launched three brand new mobiles in the February and its best ever in the summer.

First came the Nokia 3 - the brand's budget friendly Snake-less smartphone - quickly followed by the more premium Nokia 6. It's got a sleek metallic build, runs off a bloatware-free Android 7 Nougat and is one of the cheapest 'proper' mobile phones on the market. Then followed the cheaper Nokia 5 and most expensive in the range Nokia 8.

We're now firmly into 2019 and these devices are still well worth your consideration. TechRadar will help you source the best deal possible for your new Nokia 6. Our price comparison tool takes in prices from all the biggest retailers and resellers so that you can be assured the cheapest price - no matter if you need a contract deal or just the handset to team up with a bargain SIM only deal.

SIM free Nokia 6 prices

The Nokia 6 compares very favourably to other cheap handsets on the SIM-free phone scene. At less than £200 from Carphone Warehouse, it's better value than the likes of the iPhone SE and LG G5 to buy outright, but pricier than the contents of Motorola's bargain basement (i.e. Moto G5, G4 Plus, etc). Consider that you can grab a standalone SIM card for less than a fiver a month and a little bit of fancy footwork could get you a brilliant price overall.

Solid specs. Full HD display. Premium metal casing. And all for a very affordable price. There isn't much not to like about the Nokia 6. And possibly its best feature is the way it runs from the stock Android 7 interface, making it an absolute doddle to use.

For this budget, it's never going to match the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S9 for pure processing power, but you can always pay a little more for the Arte version if you think you'll need more RAM.
