The Sims 5: Here's A First Look At The Upcoming Game's Neighborhoods And Animations

Though June's Behind The Sims stream might have been focused on the The Sims 4's upcoming Horse Ranch expansion, the team surprised fans with a short segment dedicated to the next entry in The Sims franchise, Project Rene. Revealed late last year, Project Rene is EA's attempt at "renewing" of The Sims franchise and marks the series' fifth mainline entry, leading many fans to simply call it The Sims 5. Whereas the game's initial reveal focused on highlighting concepts the team was looking to integrate into The Sims franchise--such as seamless cross-play between PC and mobile--the Behind The Sims stream showcased several prototype scenes and offered more information regarding the game's lighting, animations, hair customization, and socialization. In regards to lighting, the team stated it is currently working on exploring "new lighting technologies that will allow us to create highly customizable spaces and let players tell emotionally resonant stories that will look great on your computer and on your phone," but didn't confirm exactly what that entailed. However, it did share a short video depicting the game's day-and-night cycle, as well as a few images depicting interior lighting.Continue Reading at GameSpot

The Ouya Dared To Imagine An Independent Game Console

The Ouya is celebrating its 10-year anniversary today, June 25, 2023. Below, we look at its legacy as a system that endeavored to crack into a market with an atypical approach. Like many failed console projects, the Ouya was both ahead of and behind the times. Released 10 years ago today, the Ouya was an independently developed console, funded, in part, by a massive Kickstarter campaign. Questions, criticisms, and concerns abounded, but there was also excitement at the possibility space such a console would create. What could an independent-focused console and development community create? The Ouya was a $99 micro-console, built with Android architecture. The pitch was in the low-price point and the fact that every console shipped was also a dev kit. Anyone with some technical knowhow could begin developing games for the platform. The console promised to have accessible developer tools, a library of exclusive indies, and to bridge the mobile and console worlds.Continue Reading at GameSpot

One Of Alan Wake 2's Scary Campaigns Is A "Breather" Because The Other Is So Terrifying

One of Alan Wake 2's two campaigns is so scary that developer Remedy Entertainment considers its other protagonist's world of Bright Falls a "breather" for players--despite also having plenty of frights. Sitting down with Alan Wake's co-director Kyle Rowley and senior narrative designer Molly Maloney for an interview following a hands-off demo of Alan Wake 2, they told me that the campaign starring Alan Wake, which takes place in the otherworldly dimension known as the Dark Place, is so terrifying, that by comparison, co-protagonist's Saga Anderson's campaign was deliberately paced to be lighter and quirkier in tone--albeit one still filled with deer-headed cultists, supernatural creatures, and scares. Kyle Rowley told me that, unlike the Dark Place (where Alan Wake is presumably trapped alone in a nightmarish realm resembling twisted memories of his time in New York City), Bright Falls will have plenty of levity. Oh, and even daylight.Continue Reading at GameSpot

Lawsuit Accuses Amazon Of Decieving Customers Into Buying Prime

The Federal Trade Commission has sued Amazon for allegedly enrolling customers into Prime without their consent and making it difficult to unsubscribe. According to the Associated Press, the FTC filed a complaint with the US District Court for the Western District of Washington. The agency accused Amazon of deceiving customers into signing up for Prime. The complaint claimed that the company made it difficult to buy items without subscribing to Prime. Allegedly, customers were sometimes presented with buttons to close transactions that did not clearly state they would also be enrolled in Prime. The FTC has said that the public version of the complaint has been significantly redacted, however it also claimed that the agency has "a number of allegations" which confirm the legitimacy of the lawsuit. FTC Chair Lina Khan said in a prepared statement, "Amazon tricked and trapped people into recurring subscriptions without their consent, not only frustrating users but also costing them significant money. These manipulative tactics harm consumers and law-abiding businesses alike."Continue Reading at GameSpot

Nintendo Suggested Ubisoft Should Have Waited For Switch's Successor To Release Mario + Rabbids 2

Nintendo had suggested to Ubisoft that it would have been in its best interest to release Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope on the Switch's successor. Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot told GameIndustry.biz "(via VGC)" that the issue was it "had already released a Mario Rabbids game [on Switch], so by doing another we had two similar experiences on one machine. On Nintendo, games like this never die. There are 25 Mario games on Switch. Nintendo [has advised] that it's better to do one iteration on each machine. We were a bit too early, we should have waited for [the next console]." Guillemot continued by saying, "Because you could play a great game. And we think it will last for ten years, because we will update it for the new machine that will come in the future." It is also worth pointing out that despite the game's positive reviews, Ubisoft was surprised that it didn't sell as well as it wanted.Continue Reading at GameSpot

In Citizen Sleeper 2, Every Mechanic Strives To Have A Story-Driven Consequence

The original Citizen Sleeper came out at the perfect time for me. The 2022 role-playing video game was released just as my role as the "forever GM" among my friend group was solidifying, leaving me eager for tabletop-inspired gaming experiences where I could be a player. Utilizing an action economy based around rolling dice to deliver an agency-rich roleplaying experience, Citizen Sleeper scratched that itch I was looking for. A year later, developer Jump Over The Age has announced that Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector is already in development. As you can probably surmise, I'm ecstatic. Like its predecessor, Citizen Sleeper 2 sees you play as a robotic individual known as a Sleeper. The game begins with you partially rewriting your programming, stopping your need to depend on the stabilizing agent that Sleepers need to regularly inject themselves with in order to survive. However, the process is interrupted, causing you to experience memory loss and suffer multiple malfunctions in your body. As your health continues to decline, you team up with a friend you no longer have any memory of and take off on a ship, jumping from location to location in order to stay one step ahead of the gang leader hunting you down. Jump Over the Age is a one-person game development studio founded by Gareth Damian Martin--I sat down with them to talk about creating Citizen Sleeper 2 so soon after the release of the first game, and how this sequel will expand upon the already solid tabletop-inspired gameplay loop. Following the interview, I asked Martin about Steam Deck support and they said they're "definitely" making the game with Steam Deck in mind and that "later on, we'll definitely be announcing more platforms." For now, Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector is only confirmed for PC.Continue Reading at GameSpot

House Of The Dragon Season 2 Will Have More "Traditional" Storytelling

The Game of Thrones spin-off House of the Dragon is coming back for a second season, and showrunner Ryan Condal has teased more of what to expect from the sophomore season. Be warned that this story contains spoilers for House of the Dragon. Speaking to Deadline, Condal said Season 1 laid the foundation and now Season 2 will settle into the "more traditional rhythms of storytelling." "We did the hard, complex work of setting up this entirely new dynasty and family and all the players in Season 1 and took the time to do all the character work so you understood where everybody fell along the line of are they on Alicent's side of the equation, Aegon's side or are they on Rhaenyra's side and Daemon's side," Condal said. "The excitement now is that we get to fall into the more traditional rhythms of storytelling and see where that story is going to go."Continue Reading at GameSpot

Star Wars TV Show Andor's Massive Budget Revealed In New Report

The Disney+ Star Wars TV series Andor reportedly carried a massive budget, and creator and showrunner Tony Gilroy says it was justified because the show couldn't be made cheaply. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Andor the show had a production cost of $250 million. There were 12 episodes in Season 1, which would break down to $20 million per episode. The story isn't clear on if $250 million was the budget for the first season or both. In any event, it's a big number and Gilroy said his team "got lucky." That's because Disney greenlit the show during the "gold rush" of TV deals when companies like Disney and others were spending big money to create content.Continue Reading at GameSpot

Starfield's Crafting And Modding Looks Wildly Varied

Starfield is Xbox's biggest game this fall, and Microsoft took the time to highlight it with its own separate Starfield Direct presentation. The lengthy deep dive took a closer look at almost every aspect of the game, and took an especially detailed focus on combat, including how you'll craft and mod weapons to deal with enemies. The presentation showed a variety of ways you can outfit your gear to fit the situation or your combat style. Those include modifying your weapons with larger magazines or different grips or barrels to create the right feel and flow. The customization is modular, letting you swap individual parts. A pistol was shown with a silencer, laser sight, and holographic sight options. The suppressor is more suited for a stealthy play style, or you can use explosive rounds if you're in a louder mood. Sometimes you'll need to swap your gear to suit a mission based on the environment, as we saw a look at taking out a distant enemy with a sniper rifle in a hazy fog. Bethesda boasted that it's totally overhauled its combat for Starfield, with more fluid animations. You also have more mobility, thanks in part to your jet pack. You have to contend with some of the realities of outer space, like being pushed back if you fire a ballistic weapon in a zero-G environment.Continue Reading at GameSpot

Real Trucking Company Is Buying Billboards In American Truck Simulator To Help Recruit Staff

The real-world trucking company Schneider National is paying for ads in American Truck Simulator to try to convince people to come work for them. SCS Software, the developers of American Truck Simulator, said in a blog post (via GamesRadar) that the billboards in the game are now advertising Schneider National and directing players to the company's careers website. This might not be a permanent addition to the game, as SCS said it's only in the "try-out phase." Get Good With Fortnite's Kinetic Boomerang

Fortnite Chapter 4 Season 3 has introduced a ton of cool new gimmicks to Battle Royale, and the one we're all probably going to be using the most is the Kinetic Boomerang. If you were hoping this new weapon would somehow double as a mobility device like the Kinetic Blade and Shockwave Hammer did, sorry--no such luck. This thing is only for attacking your enemies. The Kinetic Boomerang is, thankfully, fairly easy to find. They drop from chests, spawn as floor loot, and, like the Kinetic Blade, there are dedicated boomerang stands in the new jungle area--look for those old temple ruins that are scattered all throughout that area--where they're guaranteed to spawn every game. The Kinetic Boomerang is pretty simple in concept: You throw it, it does damage to the first player or object that it hits--60 damage to players--and then it comes back to you. And it will cause damage to anything it hits along the way back to you. There's no cooldown--as soon as it returns to your hand, you're free to throw it again. But the further you throw it, of course, the longer it's going to take to get back to you.Continue Reading at GameSpot

Diablo 4 Paragon Board System And Paragon Glyphs Guide

The Diablo 4 Paragon system will likely cause a few headaches initially. After leveling up to level 50, you'll soon find out that there are even more mechanics to consider for your build. Here's our guide to help you with the Paragon Board and Paragon Glyphs in Diablo 4. How to Unlock and Use the Paragon Board and Paragon Glyphs in Diablo 4 The Diablo 4 Paragon Board is unlocked automatically once you reach level 50. In fact, we can consider levels 1 to 49 as the portion where you come up with the core facets of your build, such as skills and passives. Then, at level 50 and beyond, all your XP gains will go toward the Paragon Board system. This can be accessed by opening your character page, going to the Abilities panel, and switching to the Paragon tab. Now, to be fair, the first time you see the board, it can feel a little daunting. HyperX Cloud III Gaming Headset Review - Built Different

Having seen new headsets come out at a fairly brisk pace over the years, it'd be fair to wonder what the fuss is about from iteration to iteration when looking at a new option like the HyperX Cloud III. It's usually a handful of minor improvements between each model, and sometimes that's enough for companies to justify a refresh of tried-and-true products (as was the case when I reviewed the Logitech G Pro X 2 wireless gaming headset recently). Although it's been about eight years since its predecessor came out, that's sort of where the HyperX Cloud III lands, the just-released follow-up to the long-revered Cloud II. It's a testament to how well-designed the older headset was, but the refinements make this revision a worthy successor and effectively one of the best wired headsets available. Changes such as the slightly plushier cushions, angular earcups, and better balanced audio are welcome. However, I found the most notable upgrade to be in the impressive microphone quality, which is top-notch, especially for a headset. And the combination of flexibility, durability, and minimal clamp force remain key features to make the Cloud III impressively designed from a comfort and ergonomic standpoint. It's not flashy, and it's not going to blow you away with an array of features or customizability, but at a standard retail price of $100 USD, you get a superb headset--nothing more, nothing less. See at Best Buy Packaging and Features The HyperX Cloud III comes with the headset (of course), the detachable microphone, a 3.5mm auxiliary input to USB-C cable, and a USB-C to USB type-A adapter. The headset itself has the 3.5mm audio cable attached to it and measures about 4 feet, which isn't that long. If you're using this in a PC gaming situation, though, the aux-to-USB cable also acts as an extension cord. The Cloud III still uses 53mm drivers but are now set at an angle which is said to give a more accurate audio experience, and as we'll get into later, they're enough to pack a punch.Continue Reading at GameSpot

Sleeping Beauty Horror Movie In The Works

There have been countless Sleeping Beauty remakes and interpretations, the most famous one being the Disney animated classic, which has its own live-action spin-offs and sequels. First reported by Bloody Disgusting, the iconic fairytale will be made into a horror movie by the creators of Cinderella's Curse, called Sleeping Beauty's Massacre. Shooting is set to start in August in the United Kingdom with ITN Studios distributing. Much like Cinderella's Curse, Sleeping Beauty's Massacre will also be produced and directed by Louisa Warren with Jasmine Ebony Thomas (Motherland) writing. "This film will flip everything as you know it on its head. It is savage, dark, and utterly horrifying," said Warren in a statement. "I am setting out to create the most uncomfortable horror experience to date. There will be lies, gore, and a big massacre. If you look back at the original material there is so much to play with."Continue Reading at GameSpot
