Path Of Exile 2 Won't Replace The First Game After All

Grinding Gear Games announced at this year's ExileCon keynote that Path of Exile 2, initially planned as a replacement for its predecessor, will now become a separate game running on its own client. The decision to split the games came after PoE2 underwent substantial expansion since its initial announcement four years ago, as reported by PC Gamer. Grinding Gear Games co-founder Jonathan Rogers highlighted the extensive additions to PoE2, including six new classes, 36 ascendancy classes, 600 monsters, 100 bosses, 240 active skills, and 1,500 passive skills. Notably, players have embraced the addition of a dodge roll with no cooldown. Initially, there were concerns about replacing the beloved Path of Exile 1 with the sequel (something we recently saw with Overwatch replacing the first game). Rogers said, "We realized that our plan to replace PoE1 with PoE2 would essentially be getting rid of a game that people love for no real reason. So we made a decision: Path of Exile 1 and 2 will be separate, with their own mechanics, balance, endgames, and leagues."Continue Reading at GameSpot

New Elden Ring Patch Shakes Up Critical Hits, PvP, And More

The Lands Between has just received another update. The 1.10 patch for Elden Ring is now live for all platforms, and it primarily brings changes to PvP, but it does also affect other areas of the game. Changes include adjustments to poise, increased damage on specific attacks, and bug fixes. Now whenever you're in a PvP match, poise damage will be increased for all weapons, as well as some spells and incantations. Poise will also increase when you're attacking someone with skills, spells, incantations, or using weapon attacks that generate poise. In addition, critical hit angles have also been extended. PvP isn't the only thing getting an adjustment, as previously mentioned. Whenever you're playing the game, there's now an increased critical hit damage and decreased recovery time after you miss a critical hit. A bug that caused the effect of the Sacred Order to continue after switching weapons has been fixed. An expansion for Elden Ring, Shadow of the Erdtree, is currently in the works, but doesn't have a release date yet.Continue Reading at GameSpot

Diablo 4 Won't Receive Another Patch Like Controversial Season 1 Update "Ever Again"

In a candid Diablo IV developer livestream, Blizzard said it realizes the game's controversial Season 1 update missed the mark and is vowing to make sure it doesn't happen again. The update, which drastically reduced player power by nerfing affixes like Vulnerable damage and Critical Strike damage while also nerfing important defensive stats, has not gone over well with the Diablo IV community. It's a fact Blizzard is well aware of and addressed head-on. "We want to acknowledge everyone's feedback in regards to reducing player power," associate community management director Adam Fletcher said. "We know it is bad. We know it is not fun. We ourselves know that it's not the greatest play experience for players out there."Continue Reading at GameSpot

Relive Sony's Meme-Heavy E3 2006 Conference In Glorious HD

The Electronic Entertainment Expo might be on hiatus with an unclear return, but like one of Metallica's best songs, the memory remains. Specifically the memory of Sony's 2006 E3 press conference, which has been uploaded in glorious HD by video game documentary makers Noclip, who recently launched a new channel dedicated to preserving the history of gaming media. Sony's E3 press conference from that year is especially memorable, as over the course of almost two hours, the company presented a showcase that was the polar opposite of its 1995 E3 outing. Compared to the mic drop moment when the PlayStation's competitive price was succinctly revealed, the 2006 press conference saw jaws drop when it was confirmed that the 60GB PlayStation 3 had a $600 price tag. Or more specifically, a $599 US dollars price tag. The rest of the show wasn't much better either, as a poor lineup of PS3 exclusives being revealed, awkward gameplay segments, giant enemy crabs, and a weird controller reveal sucked all of the energy out of the room. In comparison, Microsoft's Xbox 360 reveal the previous year at E3 helped generate some serious momentum for the company, but it did lack the Ridge Racer meme goldmine that Sony would bring to the table in 2006.Continue Reading at GameSpot

Nintendo Hasn't Made A Star Fox In Seven Years, But Here's The Next Best Thing

Star Fox fans have been longing for a new space-faring shooter in that old-school linear dogfighting style, and right now the prospects look grim. With hope seemingly lost, however, Flippfly--the developer behind 2013 indie hit Race The Sun--have a present for ya with their next project, Whisker Squadron: Survivor. Whisker Squadron is a roguelite on-rails space shooter where players blast into space as the titular Whisker Squadron--Olivia, Gigi, Max, and Ross--as they do a barrel roll in 30-minute runs across 10 randomly generated zones. Each zone is filled with cocky little freaks called the Swarm, which range from small enemies to massive bosses, and each run will present a new set of challenges. The game also allows players to make changes to their ship between runs, where they can give a different pilot a chance to kick some tail--with each pilot offering different attribute buffs--or add or change weapon types for when they want to try shooting the bad guys. Customization is completely in the player's hands, so long as they never give up and trust their instincts, but just be sure to use bombs wisely.Continue Reading at GameSpot

Microsoft And Sony Reach Deal To Keep Call Of Duty On PlayStation

Days after defeating the FTC’s challenge to its purchase of Activision Blizzard--and one day before its scheduled meeting with the UK’s CMA--Microsoft has reached an agreement with Sony to keep the Call Of Duty franchise on PlayStation post-merger. Microsoft boss Phil Spencer announced the deal via Twitter, where he says the two sides “have signed a binding agreement” to keep the successful first-person shooter franchise coming to PlayStation consoles. “We look forward to a future where players globally have more choice to play their favorite games,” the tweet continued. We are pleased to announce that Microsoft and @PlayStation have signed a binding agreement to keep Call of Duty on PlayStation following the acquisition of Activision Blizzard. We look forward to a future where players globally have more choice to play their favorite games. — Phil Spencer (@XboxP3) July 16, 2023 The deal was struck days after a California judge ruled in favor of Microsoft against the FTC, which thwarted the regulatory commission’s attempt to delay Microsoft’s purchase of Activision Blizzard. Silent Hill: Ascension Explores Classic Themes With A Community-Led Episodic Format

Silent Hill: Ascension will explore tried-and-true themes with a community-led, episodic approach. A new behind-the-scenes look at Silent Hill: Ascension clarifies the game's take on serial, interactive storytelling and its exploration of the franchise's mythology and themes. As previously revealed, viewers of Silent Hill: Ascension will watch episodes and make decisions simultaneously as part of live "story events." Decisions will be permanent, which means that, unlike other games of this kind, viewers will not be able to go back and see how a different decision would affect the story. Fans can view episodes after live "story events," for an as yet undetermined amount of time, and their decisions will count as part of the "voting process." The episodic game will explore Silent Hill's key themes across locations around the globe, involving a diverse ensemble cast. Silent Hill 2 is the clear primary inspiration. In the video, developers discuss wanting to create a horrifying setting and loathsome creatures that reflect the complex traumas of the central cast. Like previous games, the characters will be thrown into mysterious, supernatural circumstances without clear reasoning. As the series progresses, the central mysteries will be begin to resolve and viewers will discover more about who the characters really are.Continue Reading at GameSpot

CoD: Warzone's New The Boys Superpowers Are Great--But They Don't Belong Everywhere

The Season 4 Reloaded update is live in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2, bringing a mid-season crossover with The Boys that fuels much of the content with fancy operator bundles, map changes, themed camos, and superpowers taking over Warzone 2. However, the superpowered fun is annoyingly invading too many maps and modes, and it would make more sense as a standalone playlist. Season 4 Reloaded temporarily adds the new Temp V field upgrade, which is named after the super serum used in The Boys to give anyone a random superpower for just 24 hours. Temp V works well as a field upgrade for Call of Duty because it gives you one of four random superpowers with one activation. Once you use it, you'll lose the ability and need to find another dose of Temp V. This helps keep the superpowers from being overused and spammy. Injecting Temp V will give you either an electric shockwave attack, laser vision, teleportation, or a charged jump attack. These superpowered field upgrades are pretty abundant in battle royale, so you shouldn't have any trouble finding Temp V, and if you don't like the random ability, you can swap the equipped field upgrade for another randomized power.Continue Reading at GameSpot

Peter Molyneux Says Next Game Includes Something No Game Before It Has Ever Had

Peter Molyneux, the famed video game designer known for his work on the Fable series and making bold claims about his projects, has begun to tease his next game. Speaking to GameReactor, Molyneux said his next game has a mechanic that has "never been seen in a game before." "I feel like we are exploiting that mechanic in a world and an environment which may be familiar to people. And because it is in a familiar environment, it'll be a lot fresher," Molyneux said. "And a lot of this is very mystical because I'm trying to avoid to tell you what it's like. But it's going to be a lot more like a kind of Fable, Black and White, Dungeon Keeper kind of experience."Continue Reading at GameSpot

The OG Xbox Live Is Back From The Dead--This Is The Team Making It Happen

Xbox Live was born on November 15, 2002. Though it wasn't the first online service offered by a video game console, it's fair to say that the original Xbox was the box that popularized the concept on an industry-wide level. Hits like Project Gotham Racing 2, Phantasy Star Online, and especially Halo 2 introduced a generation of console gamers to the concept of online play, and the world of gaming has never been the same since. And though Microsoft pulled the plug on the original Xbox Live back in 2010, a team of programmers and hackers at Insignia have brought it back to life on modded Xboxes--a triumph of engineering that serves as a reminder of the importance of digital preservation. Insignia is a collaboration between five main developers and hobbyists, along with a community of die-hard original Xbox fans. The project got its start in 2019, when developers Billy and Luke (who, along with the rest of the team, requested to be credited by their first names) decided to work together to see if they could create an alternative to Xbox Live. Luke is the lead developer of Cxbx-Reloaded, an open-source Xbox emulator for Windows; Billy has worked on a number of projects, including an Insignia-esque replacement online service for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U. Luke says that he had considered trying to work on online connectivity multiple times throughout the decade-plus that he's spent working on Cxbx-Reloaded, but it was never top of mind. Once the two of them started working together--and recruited other developers to the cause--they were able to achieve a measure of success more quickly than they expected. "There was no big moment of inspiration at the start," Luke says. "As soon as we saw our first successful login, that inspired me to keep working at it and see it through."Continue Reading at GameSpot

Meet The Team Behind Hollow Knight's Bewilderingly Ambitious Voice Mod

The world of Hollow Knight, Hallownest, is one that lingers in the mind. Its intricate map, intriguing lore, and desolate yet inviting corridors have earned it a place in the annals of great metroidvanias, alongside the planet Zebes and Dracula's various castles. However, its chitinous inhabitants have chittered only in their bug languages for the years since its release--until now. A massive team of voice actors and modders recently released a mod called Hallownest Vocalized, which grants English-speaking voices to every inhabitant of the bug-filled land, from the lowliest grub to the toughest boss, and adds vocal narration to every text in the game's lengthy bestiary and various lore tablets. Organized by director and YouTuber "Ccmaci," the project took shape over two years of constant production. By his own admission, his initial goal of giving a voice to "everything" in Hollow Knight seemed ambitious from the start, but ultimately doable. However, once he had enlisted more than 100 volunteer voice actors to fill the roles, he realized just how bold of an undertaking he had committed himself to. "The word 'everything' meant something larger with each passing month," he explains. Ccmaci first played Hollow Knight back in 2019, and like so many others, he was utterly enraptured by it from the start. His enjoyment went deeper than simply seeing everything that it had to offer--he was so immersed that the world of Hallownest felt real to him in a way that no other game ever had. He was almost disappointed when he started his second playthrough and found that Hollow Knight's opening area, the Crossroads, had lost the magic. For the first time, he felt like he was navigating a 2D video game level, not an inhabited world.Continue Reading at GameSpot

Rust Armorer Allegedly Concealed Cocaine From Cops After Deadly Shooting On Movie Set

In an ongoing investigation surrounding the shooting incident on the set of the independent Western film Rust in 2021, prosecutors in New Mexico claim that armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed attempted to hide cocaine after being questioned by police. Deadline reported on these developments. The prosecutors filed a motion to protect the witness's identity, citing concerns about media harassment and potential industry blacklisting. Gutierrez-Reed's lawyer refuted the claims, stating the lack of corroboration or evidence. This revelation was disclosed in a recent filing by special prosecutors Kari Morrissey and Jason Lewis, who have added a charge of tampering with evidence against Gutierrez-Reed, stating that she allegedly "did transfer narcotics to another person with the intent to prevent the apprehension, prosecution, or conviction of herself." The specific type of drug involved was not disclosed at the time of the filing.Continue Reading at GameSpot
