Acer Chromebook Tab 10 ARCore Support Now Live, New APIs Released

In short: Google has now confirmed the arrival of ARCore support for the Acer Chromebook Tab 10. This is a significant event in the ARCore timeline as it marks the first time support for Google’s augmented reality (AR) platform has been extended to a device powered by Chrome OS.

Background: Up until now, Google’s ARCore was primarily only available on Android devices such as smartphones. However, back in early August Google did announce that support would be extended to Chrome OS-powered devices starting off with the Chromebook Tab 10. Although at the time Google simply said the support will go live at some point in the Fall. Now, however, the company has announced the new support as live with the confirmation buried within a wider announcement on new APIs that are now available to those developing apps and services related to the ARCore platform. Speaking of ARCore device support, earlier in the week a teardown of the latest ARCore Android app APK revealed support for a number of additional devices was en route, including some unreleased ones, such as the OnePlus 6T.

Impact: Besides the obvious impact of this being the first Chrome OS device to now support ARCore, the Acer Chromebook Tab 10 itself is a device primarily aimed at the education market. Which ultimately now means educators using the tablet will be able to draw on ARCore-based apps and services to help out in the classroom. Marking the latest addition to the ever-increasing number of Google-offered services and features already available to education users and workers. In principle, this should also pave the way for other Chrome OS devices to gain their own support for the AR platform in due course, although at present there’s no clear indication on which Chrome OS devices will be added to the support list, or when. In the meantime, users of the Acer Chromebook Tab 10 should now be able to download the ARCore app from the Google Play Store providing they are downloading the latest version (1.5) of the app, and the version of ChromeOS running on the tablet is a minimum of version 69 on the stable channel.
