RED Offers Aluminum Hydrogen One To Titanium Backers

RED will offer a free aluminum RED Hydrogen One smartphone to consumers who pre-ordered the titanium variant of the device. James Jannard, the founder of RED, made this announcement in a recent forum post. Jannard stated that the tech firm will not be able to ship the titanium Hydrogen One to its backers on October 9th as earlier promised and as a compromise to its customers, the company has decided that it will first ship the aluminum variant of the RED Hydrogen One to the customers who pre-ordered the higher-end model of the smartphone. Backers may choose to keep the aluminum version of the device even after tech firm starts shipping the higher-end variant of the smartphone to its customers at no extra cost.

The company founder also apologized for the delay and attributed this problem to the original design manufacturer (ODM) that actually produces the smartphones. RED claimed that its supplier initially promised that it can manufacture enough units of the titanium Hydrogen One for the customers who pre-ordered the device. However, not only did the suppliers fail to deliver sufficient quantities of the handset, Jannard described the first batch of the titanium units as a “disaster” and a failure although he did not further elaborate his statement.

RED first announced the Hydrogen One smartphone more than a year ago, and aside from pre-orders, the device will also be sold through installment plans offered by partner carriers Verizon and AT&T. Verizon initially scheduled the launch of the handset last summer while AT&T previously stated that it will release the Hydrogen One this fall. However, Jannard revealed last month that certification issues delayed the commercialization of the product, forcing both Verizon and AT&T to revise their respective launch timeframes for the device. The RED Hydrogen One is expected to sport a holographic mobile display and an audio setup that could provide a multi-dimensional sound experience. The Snapdragon 835 chipset from Qualcomm powers the device, and it will ship with 6GB of RAM and Android 8.1 Oreo pre-installed. RED priced the aluminum version of the smartphone at $1,295, while the higher-end titanium model of the device costs $1,595.
