In short: Yale and August have announced a new line of smart locks, which are called Assure Locks. These are Connected By August, so you can use the existing August app to control these locks, as well as the features that are already included in August smart locks – like the smart alerts. These new locks do not have an actual lock on the front, instead, it’s a keypad. So you no longer need to worry about bringing your keys with you, instead you can either use the August app to automatically unlock your home when you get home, or press unlock through the app. If you don’t have your phone with you, there is the key pad which you can use to punch in your code and get into your home.
Background: Last year, Yale’s parent-company ASSA ABLOY, purchased August. It has taken nearly a year for anything (consumer facing) to come from that purchase, but it’s finally here. Not only has ASSA ABLOY launched a new product, but it is also including August’s popular smart alerts features. These allow your lock to automatically lock or unlock when you are within 500 feet of your home. Which is a very useful, and not to mention popular, feature of August’s Smart Locks. Of course, these all still work with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant, so that’s not an issue.
Impact: Yale is going to offer the Assure Lock Connected by August line in two different models. There is the Assure Lock SL which is a sleek, 100-percent key-free lock, and it has an edge-to-edge touchscreen keypad which will be priced at $299. Now if you still want the traditional key access, there will be one featuring the keypad as well as a key hole, for $279. Both of these are on sale now, and will hit other retailers in mid-October.
