Samsung Galaxy Watch Golf Edition Is Now (Also) A Thing

In short: Samsung is continuing its tradition of releasing special variants of its wearables targeted at golf players, having just announced the Galaxy Watch Golf Edition. The South Korean company still doesn’t appear to have any intention of launching these gadgets outside of its home country where consumers are able to purchase the Golf Editions of both the 42mm and 46mm Galaxy Watch models, priced at the equivalent of $350 and $370, respectively. The smaller device is only available in Midnight Black, whereas the larger one retails in Silver. In addition to having the same functionalities supported by the original Galaxy Watch line, the new wearables also provide in-depth information on approximately 60,000 golf courses around the world, as well as a fitness tracking mode specifically designed for one of the most popular club-and-ball sports on the planet. The Galaxy Watch Golf Edition will be sold by golf equipment stores in the Far Eastern country, as well as Samsung itself.

Background: The wrist-worn gadget is a follow-up to last year’s Gear S3 Golf Edition but it ended up debuting mere weeks following the release of the main lineup it’s based on, whereas Samsung introduced its predecessor over a year after launching the original Gear S3 series. The price tags attached to the new devices are in line with those of the regular Galaxy Watch models. Samsung’s Galaxy Watch family has been met with a largely positive response from both consumers and critics but the LTE models still aren’t widely available for purchase in the United States, which led to some (prospective) customer frustration.

Impact: The fact that Samsung keeps churning out these golf-focused wearables is evidence enough such products are selling well in its home country. Likewise, the continued lack of their global availability suggests the company’s focus groups and other research indicate the worldwide demand for its specialized fitness gadgets is still low, so American consumers looking for premium golf-oriented smartwatches are still out of luck.
