LG Touches On The Design Philosophy Behind The V40 ThinQ

The upcoming LG V40 ThinQ was teased by the Korean OEM yesterday, and shortly after sharing the first renders with the device, LG published a blog post titled “touch, a big part of the [phone’s] design” in which it discussed some of the design choices and philosophy behind the new flagship. According to the source, one of the more important aspects the OEM has considered when creating the LG V40 ThinQ was the sensation of touch and a clean aesthetic, wanting to leave prospective customers surprised when picking up the phone and holding it for the first time. To this end, LG not only carefully picked a range of unique colors for the phone’s exterior but also treated the glass back panel with its proprietary Silky Blast finish.

LG wants customers to have a “proper grip feel” when holding the latest flagship in their hands, and the OEM claims to have achieved this in part through its Silky Blast treatment. Specifically, the term represents a proprietary method of etching microscopic pits over the smooth glass back panel of the phone, resulting in a surface that is less susceptible to fingerprint marks compared to standard Gorilla Glass, and making for a less slippery device. According to the OEM, the Silky Blast treatment doesn’t affect the panel’s durability, and judging by the official press renders, it doesn’t seem to alter the look of the phone either. Nevertheless, the smartphone’s overall design went through some subtle changes compared to its predecessor, with LG further emphasizing design simplicity by hiding certain features and components including the front proximity sensor. Furthermore, while the LG V40 ThinQ has a larger display compared to the previous model, the width of the phone hasn’t changed and should clock in at roughly 75.4 millimeters for a familiar grip. The OEM achieved a larger panel through thinner bezels all around, rather than by increasing the smartphone’s overall footprint, and while this bit of details is unmentioned, it’s likely that the same 18:9 image format has been preserved.

LG also revealed that a fourth color has been added to the V40 ThinQ palette, which now includes the New Aurora Black, New Platinum Gray, New Moroccan Blue, and Carmine Red, the latter of which comes in as a replacement for the Raspberry Rose flavor. However, color availability will depend on each market, and further details should be announced during the smartphone’s official unveiling set to take place on October 3. The flagship is expected to carry Qualcomm’s top-tier Snapdragon 845 chipset under the hood and run Android 8.0 Oreo out of the box, complete with LG’s AI features powered by the ThinQ platform.
