A new promotional video from Huawei designed to sell viewers on the upcoming Mate 20 series emerged on YouTube, with the clip seemingly emphasizing a handful of key device aspects, including “professional photography” and “fastest connectivity.” These appear to be two of the biggest selling points for the Mate 20 lineup, which is expected to be powered by the new Kirin 980 SoC developed in-house by the OEM’s semiconductor arm HiSilicon.
In regards to faster connectivity, the new Kirin 980 chipset takes advantage of LTE Cat.21, a standard that supports download transfer rates of up to 1.4Gbps. Additionally, the silicon includes the Hi1103 Wi-Fi integrated circuit, which is said to be capable of reaching peak theoretical download speeds of up to 1.7Gbps. The Mate 20 series should also take advantage of accurate GPS tracking as it relies on L1 and L5 dual-frequency positioning, meaning that the unit should be capable of receiving multiple signals from a single GPS satellite on different frequencies. This is similar to the Xiaomi Mi 8 which became the first commercially-available smartphone earlier this year to adopt dual-frequency GPS tracking.
As for photography, the Huawei Mate 20 series is expected to carry a camera setup similar to the Huawei P20 Pro introduced by the Chinese OEM in March. The camera array will look different as it will be positioned in the center of the back panel, but in overall, the setup should include a monochrome sensor, a telephoto lens, and a high-resolution unit, all paired with an LED flash. However, once again the latest Kirin 980 chipset should play a bigger role in the camera performance, as it offers more advanced AI technologies powered by two integrated Neural Processing Units. Comparing the new chipset with the previous Kirin 970 silicon, the OEM previously described the Kirin 980 as an “impressive leap from image recognition to object detection” and as far as the end user is concerned, the new hardware should provide faster focusing among other benefits. The Huawei Mate 20 lineup will be officially introduced in London on October 16 and should include two smartphone models – the standard Mate 20 along and the Mate 20 Pro, the latter of which could potentially rely on machine learning for face-recognition capabilities as an additional authentication method.
